Overview

Molecular Microbiology for Contaminated Sites

Understanding which microorganisms are present and active in a contaminated aquifer is essential for designing effective remediation strategies and building a defensible case for site closure. EBPI coordinates access to the complete Microbial Insights analytical menu — from targeted qPCR to next-generation sequencing — with the sample handling and expert interpretation that Canadian environmental consultants need.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the turnaround time for qPCR results from Canadian sites?
Standard turnaround from receipt at Microbial Insights is 5–7 business days for Census® qPCR. EBPI coordinates local sample preparation to minimize total project time. Expedited options are available on request.
Can molecular microbial data be used in Canadian regulatory submissions?
Yes. Molecular data (qPCR, PLFA) is increasingly accepted by provincial regulators as lines of evidence for Monitored Natural Attenuation and enhanced bioremediation plans. EBPI can advise on data presentation and documentation requirements for specific provincial programs.
What is a Bio-Trap® sampler and when should I use one?
Bio-Trap® samplers are passive in-well devices colonized by native subsurface microorganisms over a 2–6 week deployment period. They provide a more representative sample of the active microbial community than a pumped groundwater sample — especially useful in low-yield wells or where pumping is impractical.
Do I need Dehalococcoides testing for every chlorinated solvent site?
DHC testing is most critical where reductive dechlorination of PCE/TCE is the intended biodegradation pathway. The QuantArray®-ER panel covers DHC alongside a broader suite of functional genes in a single analysis — often the most efficient starting point for a new site.
How do I ship samples from a remote Canadian site?
EBPI provides pre-labelled sample kits and chain-of-custody documentation. Samples ship on ice overnight to EBPI for processing. We work with standard Canadian couriers and can accommodate remote northern site logistics.
